Nursing & Health Sciences Students Learn New Examination Skills
JMU Advanced Practice Nursing and Physician Assistant Programs join forces to learn advanced musculoskeletal system examination skills.
On July 16th the James Madison University Physician Assistant and Advanced Practice Nursing programs came together for inter-professional education as students learned skills for evaluation of the musculoskeletal system. Students enrolled in PA 511 Physical Diagnosis II (taught by Pamela Bailey, PA-C) and NSG 520 (taught by Chris Fasching Maphis, FNP ) met in a Burruss Hall classroom and the Nursing Health Assessment lab. Jerry Weniger, PA-C, Director of the PA program, presented didactic and lab demonstrations of assessment and special maneuvers for recognizing and diagnosing common joint and skeletal injuries.
These students, although trained separately, are increasingly practicing side by side as providers in the health care arena. It makes sense to begin working together during their education and clinical skills training. The two programs have been looking for collaborative learning opportunities and this seemed like a terrific body system to combine skill-building experiences for the students. Chris Smith, Athletic Trainer from the Sports Medicine department, lent his expertise to the process as well. Students and faculty hope to create more opportunities for inter-professional collaboration in education and practice in the future.
